Manchester United reportedly met with Antonio Conte last night as pressure grows on manager Michael Carrick following a poor start to the 2026/27 season.
The discussions are said to have taken place after United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. The result extended the club’s run to just two wins in 11 matches in all competitions.
Conte’s potential availability has emerged as Carrick’s position comes under increasing scrutiny. Carrick initially impressed as United’s interim manager before taking the job on a permanent basis, but results have deteriorated since then.
Antonio Conte’s record makes him a leading option
The Italian, 57, has considerable experience at the highest level and has managed both Chelsea and Napoli. He led Chelsea to the Premier League title and has also won major honours with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.
That record could make Conte an appealing option for United, particularly given his greater experience compared with Carrick and the club’s previous managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
However, Conte’s suitability for the role could still be questioned. He has developed a reputation for relatively short spells in charge and has frequently clashed with owners and directors during his managerial career.
United may therefore consider whether appointing a manager with Conte’s profile would provide the stability they currently need. For now, Carrick remains in charge, although the club’s latest run of results is making it increasingly difficult to justify continuing with the same approach.
