Manchester United are reportedly considering Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick, whose position is under scrutiny.
Emery has built a strong reputation during his time at Villa Park and is regarded as a leading candidate for the Old Trafford job. His record in European competition is a significant part of his appeal.
The 54-year-old has won the Europa League five times, more than any other manager. He lifted the trophy three times with Sevilla, before adding further victories with Villarreal and Aston Villa last season.
Emery also reached the final during his spell in charge of Arsenal. A report has now identified him as a serious option for Manchester United as the club considers its managerial direction.
Would Unai Emery suit Manchester United?
Emery’s achievements have largely come at clubs where expectations, while substantial, are viewed as more manageable than those at Manchester United. His only league title came with Paris Saint-Germain, where success in Ligue 1 was widely expected.
United would demand more than a return to the top four or another Europa League campaign. The club would expect its next manager to restore a sustained challenge for major honours.
That raises questions over whether Emery would be the right fit for the scale of the task at Old Trafford. He struggled to establish himself at Arsenal during their rebuilding period following Arsene Wenger’s departure.
Emery has appeared better suited to Aston Villa, where he has earned considerable credit for his work. Whether that record would translate to the heightened expectations at Manchester United remains uncertain.
