Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly keen to take the Manchester United job and has emerged as a leading candidate amid uncertainty over Michael Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
The 39-year-old has been out of work since Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit in the summer, but remains highly regarded after spells with Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich and the German national team.
Manchester United are understood to view Nagelsmann as their top target, according to the Telegraph, despite his limited experience of English football.
Julian Nagelsmann emerges as Manchester United target
Nagelsmann first established his reputation at Hoffenheim, where he became one of Europe’s youngest head coaches. He subsequently moved into a series of prominent roles, including at Bayern Munich and with Germany.
His time in charge of the national team did not produce the results expected, but that has apparently not diminished his appeal to United as they assess the position of Carrick.
Nagelsmann would be taking charge of one of the Premier League’s most demanding clubs if he moved to Old Trafford. The pressure would be immediate, particularly given the difficult period Manchester United have experienced.
He would also have to work without the benefit of a full pre-season and transfer window, adding to the challenge of making an immediate impact.
The German tactician’s experience at the highest level could represent an upgrade on Carrick, although Manchester United have already tried a range of managerial styles since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 without finding a lasting solution.
Despite the scale of the task, Nagelsmann is reportedly not put off by the prospect of taking charge at Old Trafford.
