Chelsea remain interested in Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, with the Italy international also reportedly being considered by Real Madrid.
Calafiori has emerged as an important player for Arsenal since joining from Bologna, but his versatility could make him an attractive option for Chelsea. The 24-year-old can operate at both centre-back and left-back, areas where Xabi Alonso’s side could strengthen.
According to transfer reporter Simon Phillips, Chelsea’s interest dates back to Calafiori’s time at Bologna. The west London club were also understood to have been competing for his signature before he moved to Arsenal.
Arsenal are likely to place a high valuation on the defender, with a potential fee of up to €100 million suggested. However, occasional fitness problems have limited his playing time and could, in theory, affect the price required to persuade the north London club to sell.
Chelsea face difficult task in Riccardo Calafiori pursuit
Any attempt by Chelsea to sign Calafiori would present Arsenal with a difficult decision, given the prospect of strengthening a domestic rival. The defender has impressed during his time in north London and could become an even more influential player if he remains fit and continues to develop.
Real Madrid could be viewed as a preferable destination for Arsenal if they were to consider selling, although there is currently no indication that Calafiori is close to leaving the club.
Phillips has also made clear that he is not aware of Calafiori being unhappy at Arsenal or seeking a move. Chelsea’s interest therefore remains a possibility rather than an imminent transfer, with significant progress still required before the defender’s future becomes clearer.
