Carlos Baleba could make his Manchester United debut against Tottenham Hotspur on 10 October after recovering faster than expected from an ankle ligament injury.
The Cameroon international joined United from Brighton in August in a deal worth up to £70 million, but has yet to feature after being injured during pre-season. His progress at Carrington has reportedly impressed Michael Carrick’s coaching staff.
Carlos Baleba closing in on Manchester United debut
Baleba has been following an individual training programme and was included on the bench for United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham. He was not brought on, but his involvement indicated that he was nearing a return to competitive action.
The 22-year-old could first receive playing time in a behind-closed-doors academy fixture against Lausanne-Sport. Provided he completes that match without suffering a setback, he may be considered for the visit of Tottenham after the international break.
A starting place at Old Trafford is possible, although United are unlikely to need to rush Baleba into playing a full 90 minutes after his lengthy absence. His availability from the bench would nevertheless give Carrick another option in midfield.
United strengthened the area during the summer with the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Baleba. The former Brighton player offers a different profile, with the ability to cover ground, win possession and carry the ball under pressure.
Those qualities could add greater athleticism in front of United’s defence and alter the balance of Carrick’s midfield. His return is therefore being viewed as an important development as the club prepares to face Tottenham.
United’s official statistics show that Baleba ranked in the Premier League’s top eight per cent for combined tackles and interceptions last season, while placing in the top one per cent for second balls won.
He signed a contract running until 2031, with the option of a further year. After being unavailable since arriving at Old Trafford, Baleba now appears close to finally beginning his United career.
