Two people have died after a deputy-involved shooting at a home in Bellflower, California, where an elderly woman was found unresponsive and a man was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 9500 block of Maplewood Street shortly before 1pm on Sunday, 27 September, in response to a medical emergency.
According to the sheriff’s department, deputies saw the woman lying face down through an open window. She was believed to be in her 80s and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel.
Deputies entered the property to provide assistance and encountered a man in his 50s who was allegedly armed. One deputy opened fire during the confrontation, and the man was also pronounced dead.
The woman and the man knew each other, but authorities have not disclosed their relationship. It remains unclear how the woman died or whether the man was involved in her death.
No deputies were injured. The circumstances surrounding the deaths and the shooting are now being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
