England lead Spain 2-1 at half-time in their Nations League clash at Wembley after recovering from Lamine Yamal’s early opener with goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.
Spain threatened to extend their advantage before the break, but missed several chances and saw one effort ruled out for offside. Ferran Torres endured a particularly frustrating spell as England gradually took control of the contest.
Gordon brings England level against Spain
England’s equaliser came at the end of a swift counter-attack. Gordon kept his composure inside the area before sending a low finish into the corner to make it 1-1.
The hosts then completed the turnaround soon afterwards. Nico O’Reilly delivered a dangerous cross and Kane rose to meet it, with the header taking a touch off Spain left-back Marc Cucurella before finding the net.
That gave England a 2-1 advantage at the interval and represented a significant change in the momentum of the match after Yamal’s early breakthrough.
Thomas Tuchel’s side now face a second-half test against a Spain team that had created opportunities before the break. Holding on to the lead would give England an important victory over one of Europe’s leading nations.
