A Florida man accused of stealing high-value LEGO sets from shops across north-east Florida was arrested after allegedly striking a detective with the door of a U-Haul during a pursuit.
Ronald Lorne Tipton was detained in Fernandina Beach on Tuesday, 15 September, after deputies stopped the vehicle by pinning it against a tree in a CVS car park. A second suspect, Jessica Underwood, was also arrested.
LEGO theft investigation leads to U-Haul chase
The investigation began with a series of alleged thefts at a Target store on State Road 200 in Yulee, where detectives said Tipton repeatedly targeted expensive LEGO sets.
Authorities said he was linked to incidents on 18 August, 26 August and 12 September. On one occasion, he allegedly selected four sets worth more than $900; on another, he was accused of loading several sets into a white Mazda after pushing them through an exit.
In the latest alleged incident at the store, investigators said five sets worth nearly $1,300 were taken through a fire exit. The suspected thefts in Nassau County were valued at more than $3,000, while detectives linked the operation to more than $20,000 worth of merchandise across the wider region.
The investigation moved to a Walmart on the same road on 15 September. Nassau County sheriff’s officials said Tipton first surveyed the toy aisles before leaving for a U-Haul parked behind the shop, then returned and selected 12 LEGO sets.
He allegedly fled when confronted by Walmart’s asset protection staff. A Nassau County detective later located him on a nearby service road and positioned a patrol vehicle in front of the van.
According to investigators, Tipton tried to escape and hit the detective’s left arm with the open driver’s door. The U-Haul then travelled towards Fernandina Beach, weaving through the car parks of a diner and a CVS before a deputy brought it to a halt against a tree near Sadler Road.
Fernandina Beach police helped take Tipton into custody. Deputies searching the van reportedly found bags containing substances suspected to be methamphetamine, crack cocaine and fentanyl on the passenger-side floor.
Charges over alleged organised retail theft
Tipton faces charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, coordinating others in retail theft worth more than $3,000, dealing in stolen property, possession of controlled substances and driving under the influence.
Underwood was booked on separate drug-related allegations. The sheriff’s office has not said whether further arrests will follow or identified where the stolen goods were allegedly being sold.
Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said the case showed how an investigation into a single shoplifting incident could expose a wider operation.
“Our detectives followed the evidence, connected the dots and worked with our law enforcement partners to put a suspect involved in these thefts behind bars,” he said.
