Lisandro Martinez has been criticised by former Tottenham and Blackburn player Tim Sherwood after the Manchester United defender called for greater investment following the defeat by Atletico Madrid.
Speaking on The Overlap, Sherwood suggested Martinez was targeting the club’s board because he wanted to leave Old Trafford. He also argued that the Argentina international should have kept his concerns private.
“Keep your mouth shut, mate!” Sherwood said while discussing Martinez’s comments with Jamie Redknapp, recalling that he had made a similar mistake during his own playing career.
What did Lisandro Martinez say about Manchester United?
Martinez made his remarks in a post-match interview after United’s Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid. He said the club needed to do more to build a squad capable of competing on major nights.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martinez said.
He added: “I expect more (investment). 100%. I expect more from our technical director (Jason Wilcox). I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”
Sherwood defended United sporting director Jason Wilcox, who appeared to be the main focus of Martinez’s criticism, while maintaining that the defender had chosen the wrong way to express his frustration.
The comments are likely to increase scrutiny on Martinez, although the source material also indicates that United supporters may understand his dissatisfaction with the club’s current situation.
