Viktor Gyokeres scored again for Sweden as he struck the third goal in their UEFA Nations League clash with Poland, strengthening his case for a more prominent role at Arsenal.
The 28-year-old led Sweden’s attack in the absence of Alexander Isak and capped a productive international break with goals in successive matches.
Benjamin Nygren opened the scoring before Yasin Ayari restored Sweden’s advantage after Poland’s Sebastian Szymański had equalised. Gyokeres then extended the lead in the 72nd minute.
The Arsenal striker found space to meet a well-delivered cross and finished first time with a volley, showing the positioning and instinct that have made him Sweden’s main central threat.
Gyokeres gives Mikel Arteta selection decision
Gyokeres had already scored in Sweden’s previous fixture against Romania, meaning he ended the international window with two goals from two games.
His form will offer encouragement as he looks to regain his place in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal starting line-up. After scoring 21 goals in all competitions during his debut campaign, the forward has found opportunities harder to come by at the beginning of the new domestic season.
Gyokeres has largely been restricted to late substitute appearances in recent Premier League and Champions League matches, leaving him temporarily lower in the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.
That lack of starting time has prompted speculation about his long-term role at Arsenal. His latest Sweden performance, however, gives Arteta another reminder of the striker’s ability to deliver in front of goal ahead of a demanding autumn schedule.
