A 12-year-old girl was killed and three adults were injured in a Baltimore shooting that police said followed an apparent dispute over a parking space at Leon Day Park.
Two gunmen were being sought after the incident on Saturday, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley. Investigators found two different types of cartridge at the scene.
Mr Worley said the girl was probably watching a youth football game when she was caught in the crossfire.
“What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards, and of course they both opened fire on each other,” he told a news conference.
“In the crossfire, a 12-year-old little girl, who was probably down there watching football, was shot and killed.”
Baltimore police said a 25-year-old woman and two men, aged 23 and 28, were also struck. The woman was with the girl, Mr Worley said, while the adult victims suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
“The dispute most likely occurred from a stupid parking spot,” the commissioner said.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon M Scott said: “Two men, or so-called men, got into a argument, and now this baby is gone.”
Mark Brown, coach of the Charm City Buccaneers youth football league, said the shooting happened during a match.
“Some miscellaneous outsiders caused this situation,” he told a television station at the scene. “It wasn’t us.”
Mr Brown said the youth league had operated for 29 years without an incident of this kind. “We strive to give back to the youth,” he said. “This happened over a parking spot. It was avoidable.”
