Houston is braced for another day of near-record heat on Thursday, 24 September, with temperatures forecast to reach the mid-to-upper 90s Fahrenheit.
The city’s record high for the date is 98F (37C), set in 2023. A small chance of showers and thunderstorms remains, particularly near the coast, but most of the Houston area is expected to stay dry.
The National Weather Service has also issued an air quality alert for Houston, Galveston and surrounding areas, warning that ozone pollution could reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups through Thursday evening. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and reduce driving where possible.
Houston weather forecast points to less humidity on Friday
A weak boundary moving through south-east Texas is expected to bring slightly drier air overnight, with dew points falling into the 60s. Friday will still be hot, with highs in the low to mid-90s, but conditions should feel less humid.
The heat is forecast to continue into the weekend, when mostly dry weather and temperatures in the low to mid-90s are expected across the region.
Rain and thunderstorm chances are likely to increase early next week. The wetter weather should help moderate temperatures, with the National Weather Service forecasting more widespread showers and storms around the middle of the following week.
