Kewon White, the man sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Dallas rapper MO3, is planning to appeal his conviction, his lawyers have said.
White was found guilty of capital murder by a Dallas County jury earlier this month in connection with the killing of Melvin Noble, known professionally as MO3. The sentence was imposed after prosecutors alleged that Noble was the victim of a murder-for-hire plot.
His legal team said an appeal would begin with the formal filing of the necessary paperwork and the preparation of written arguments setting out alleged errors made during the trial.
An appeal is not a retrial. Instead, an appellate court examines the trial record and considers whether significant legal or constitutional errors affected the verdict or sentence. The court could uphold the conviction, order further proceedings or, in limited circumstances, overturn the judgment.
Noble was shot and killed on Interstate 35E in Dallas on 11 November 2020. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said investigators used surveillance footage, witness accounts, digital evidence, phone records, jail calls and financial records to identify White as the alleged gunman.
White is the first of several defendants to face trial in the case. Prosecutors have also accused Dallas rapper Markies Conway, known as Yella Beezy, of arranging the killing, a claim he denies.
