Liverpool have postponed Virgil van Dijk contract talks until 2027, according to reports, leaving the club captain’s future under review despite his continuing importance to Andoni Iraola’s side.
Van Dijk, 35, is contracted until the summer of 2027 and remains first choice at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. However, the club are understood to be willing to assess his performances, fitness and role before deciding whether to offer him an extension.

There is no suggestion that Liverpool are seeking to move Van Dijk on immediately. The decision instead reflects the need to balance his status as one of the club’s most influential modern defenders with longer-term planning.
The Reds have already begun reshaping their defensive options. Ronald Araujo arrived on loan from Barcelona during the summer, while Jeremy Jacquet was also brought in after the departures of Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson.
Van Dijk has acknowledged that the reworked defence will need time to develop an understanding, particularly as Araujo and Jacquet adapt to new partnerships. He nevertheless remains captain and a central figure in Iraola’s plans.
The coming months are therefore likely to be significant as Liverpool assess whether the Dutchman is still performing at an elite level and how quickly the younger members of the squad develop around him.
Van Dijk’s age means another lengthy contract cannot be guaranteed, with the defender due to turn 36 before the start of next season. At the same time, replacing his leadership and defensive intelligence would present a considerable challenge.
If he maintains his current level, a short-term extension could remain an option. Liverpool’s decision to wait allows the club to make that judgement on the basis of his form and fitness rather than sentiment.
