Liverpool’s buyback clause for Jarell Quansah gives them an advantage over Real Madrid, Chelsea and Arsenal, but the England international is reportedly reluctant to return to Anfield.
The 23-year-old left Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 after struggling to secure regular first-team football. His progress in Germany has since turned him into an established England international and a player attracting interest from several leading clubs.
Jarell Quansah has reservations over Liverpool return
Football Insider reports that Quansah has reservations about going back to his boyhood club because of the difficulties he experienced competing for a regular place in the Liverpool team.
He made only four Premier League starts during the 2024/25 campaign before moving to Leverkusen, where consistent playing time has helped advance his career.
Liverpool negotiated a £59.5 million buyback option as part of the transfer. The clause remains valid until 15 June 2027, meaning the club could match or move ahead of rival interest by paying the agreed fee.
However, the option does not oblige Quansah to accept a return. Reports suggest that returning to Liverpool is not currently on his radar and that he would prefer a fresh challenge if he eventually leaves Germany.
GOAL has reported that Real Madrid, Chelsea and Arsenal are monitoring the defender, leaving Liverpool with a potentially valuable advantage if they decide to make use of the clause.
The situation nevertheless leaves the Reds needing to persuade Quansah that he would have a genuine first-team role. His time at Leverkusen has given him the regular football he was seeking, and a return without assurances over his position could risk reversing that progress.
Liverpool may eventually require another elite centre-back, while Quansah already knows the club and the Premier League. Activating the buyback clause, however, would be only the first step if they are to bring him back to Anfield.
