A man has died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and being attacked by the animal, South Yorkshire Police said.
Emergency services were called at 1.35pm on Saturday after reports that the man had entered the enclosure. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medical personnel, and his family has been informed.
South Yorkshire Police said the tiger was uninjured and remained inside the enclosure after the incident. The force added that there was “no wider risk to the public”.
Two land ambulances, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a doctor attended, according to Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
The wildlife park was evacuated and has been closed. In a statement, the park said its emergency response procedures had been activated and that it was working with the authorities to establish what had happened.
“The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority,” the statement said. The park will also remain closed the following day.
Footage circulating online appears to show a man being pawed and grappled by a tiger inside the enclosure. Police said they were aware of the footage and urged people not to share it.
The enclosure forms part of the park’s Land of the Tigers attraction, which opened in 2011. It is a two-acre reserve for endangered Amur tigers.
