Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring a potential transfer for Benfica centre-back Tomas Araujo, although a move in January is currently considered unlikely.
The 24-year-old has attracted attention with his performances for Benfica and Portugal, earning a place in his country’s World Cup squad this summer. He can operate at centre-back or right-back, increasing his appeal to clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Araujo is understood to have a £68 million release clause in his contract. A report by TEAMtalk says both Premier League clubs have been impressed by the defender in recent high-profile matches, but may continue watching him rather than making an immediate approach.
Tomas Araujo transfer interest could build
Manchester United and Chelsea are not the only clubs linked with Araujo. Tottenham, Newcastle and Brighton are also named as potential suitors, suggesting Benfica could face significant interest in the player.
Benfica are in a strong negotiating position while the release clause remains in place. However, interested clubs could wait until the summer before attempting to negotiate a lower fee.
United and Chelsea are also considering other defensive options, with Como player Jacobo Ramon among the names attracting interest. For now, though, Araujo remains a player under observation rather than an imminent January signing.
