Manchester United explored a move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde during the summer, but the clubs’ differing expectations over the deal prevented the transfer from progressing.
United wanted to take the 22-year-old on loan, potentially with an option or mechanism to buy him in the future. Barcelona, however, were prepared to consider Balde’s departure only on a permanent basis, with a fee of around €40 million understood to be required.
Fabrizio Romano reported that United were among the clubs informed of Balde’s availability late in the transfer window. No suitable offer was made, while the player chose to remain in Spain and compete for his place under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
Barcelona’s stance blocked Manchester United move for Balde
Balde’s decision has not yet brought him greater involvement. He has played no minutes in Barcelona’s first five competitive matches of the season.
AS reported that Xavi Espart has moved ahead of Balde in the left-back hierarchy, with Joao Cancelo also being used in the position. If his playing time does not improve, Balde could reassess his situation when the transfer window reopens in January.
That possibility may interest United, who began the season without the specialist long-term left-back Carrick wanted.
The club had also considered Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Adrien Truffert and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Newcastle refused to sell Hall, while Balde represented a different type of opportunity because of his age, pace and ability to carry the ball into attacking areas.
United could monitor Balde’s situation
United were unwilling to pay €40 million simply to meet Barcelona’s preference for a permanent transfer. However, the Spanish club’s position could become less firm if Balde continues to remain outside Flick’s plans.
With no agreement reached in the summer, United may continue to monitor the situation ahead of January and next summer, when the defender’s availability and price could become clearer.
