Manchester United have been handed encouragement in their pursuit of Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Crystal Palace striker increasingly expected to leave Selhurst Park in 2027.
The 29-year-old is in the final year of his contract, and Palace are understood to have accepted that his time with the club is drawing to a close. The Eagles must now decide whether to sell him during the January transfer window or retain him until his contract expires next summer.
Manchester United weigh up Mateta move
United have been monitoring Mateta as they consider adding an experienced forward to their squad. The club wanted to provide greater competition for Benjamin Sesko during the summer but chose to prioritise reinforcements in other areas.
That position could change in January. Sesko’s injury problems have underlined the need for another dependable option in attack, while Joshua Zirkzee could also be allowed to leave.
Mateta would offer extensive Premier League experience and has become a productive goalscorer since joining Palace. He has scored 42 league goals over the past three seasons, making him an attractive option for United as they assess whether to add an established frontman rather than another developing player.
Palace’s decision over the timing of his departure will be central to the situation. A January sale would bring in a transfer fee, whereas keeping Mateta until the end of the campaign would leave the club facing the prospect of losing him for nothing.
Manchester United football director Jason Wilcox is reportedly an admirer of the striker, although interest from other clubs means the Red Devils could face competition if they choose to formalise their approach.
For now, Mateta’s exit from Crystal Palace in 2027 appears increasingly likely, with the January window potentially giving United the chance to secure his services ahead of his contract expiry.
