Six children were rescued from a house fire by neighbours after a blaze broke out at a home in Yangebup, in Perth’s south.
The fire started shortly before 8pm on Friday while the children were inside the property. Nearby residents rushed to help, using a garden hose to tackle the flames.
Michelle said her son Joel ran into the smoke-filled house alongside another neighbour to reach the children.
“We went up to the driveway, and he just barged in to the house and into the smoke and that,” she said. “All our concern was getting those kids out.”
Joel and the other neighbour were taken to hospital. The six children were also transported to hospital as a precaution, but were not injured.
It is understood a rug caught fire while the stove was being used. The blaze was ruled accidental.
A 38-year-old Yangebup woman has been charged with one count of failing to protect children from harm and is due to face court this week.
The Department of Communities said it did not comment on specific child protection matters, but was responsible for investigating incidents and could conduct risk assessments when required.
