Michael Carrick’s position at Manchester United is causing increasing concern, with Neville suggesting the club’s decision to retain him has left the manager without authority while executives consider a replacement.
The former interim manager is described in the source material as a “lame duck”, with the dressing room allegedly having lost faith as results continue to deteriorate. The decision to delay his removal is now being portrayed as evidence of uncertainty over the club’s next move.
Manchester United decision on Michael Carrick questioned
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast with Jamie Carragher, Neville speculated that United’s decision-makers had been unable to agree on a course of action following the Bournemouth match.
“I reckon what’s happened in the 24 hours after Bournemouth is that [the club decision makers] literally debated it back and forth,” Neville said.
He added: “I don’t know this, but they’ve debated it to the point where they’ve got themselves into a muddle, and thought, ‘we’ll just stay with him’.”
Neville attributed the decision to what he called a lack of planning and a shortage of suitable alternatives, as well as uncertainty over the available candidates.
“I think staying with him is a result of the lack of planning, the lack of probably available options, the lack of decision-making around the two people that probably are available. That’s when you’re really struggling,” he said.
He also argued that dismissal can sometimes be in a manager’s own interests, drawing on his experience at Valencia.
“Sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good. I needed sacking at Valencia. I was happy that they put me out of my misery,” Neville said.
United’s preferred replacement has not been identified in the material, while the uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s position is said to be making the situation increasingly difficult for the club.
