Kobbie Mainoo has returned to first-team training ahead of Manchester United’s crucial Premier League visit to Chelsea, providing Michael Carrick with a timely midfield boost as pressure continues to build on the head coach.
Mainoo has missed United’s last four matches with injury, having been sidelined since the 1-1 draw against Tottenham on 10 October. His return has been officially confirmed by the club.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the 21-year-old is expected to be available at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder’s presence could also offer Carrick important support inside the dressing room.
Kobbie Mainoo reportedly determined to support Michael Carrick
Romano has claimed that Mainoo “loves” Carrick and is determined to fight for the manager during United’s difficult spell. He also suggested that Carrick “saved the career” of Mainoo at Old Trafford.
Before Carrick initially took charge, Mainoo was reportedly “going to leave” United on loan in January after struggling to secure regular opportunities. Carrick subsequently gave him a significant role, helping to establish a strong personal bond between the pair.
Mainoo’s return could restore some control and composure to a midfield that has appeared short of both during his absence. United suffered damaging defeats against Como and Bournemouth in that period.
Andrey Santos has also publicly backed Carrick, arguing that United’s problems should be viewed as a collective responsibility rather than being blamed solely on the head coach.
Nevertheless, Carrick remains under considerable pressure, and Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea could prove decisive for his future. Mainoo’s willingness to support the manager will not, by itself, resolve United’s wider difficulties.
If Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are both available at Stamford Bridge, Carrick will have two of his most important midfielders at his disposal for a match of major significance to his Manchester United tenure.
