Three people have been charged over an alleged shooting plot targeting Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia, after the FBI identified threatening social media posts and alerted school police.
Arrest warrants allege the suspects obtained a floor plan of the school, discussed weapons and protective equipment, and chose 20 August 2027 as the date for the planned attack. Firearms, ammunition and electronic devices have been seized as part of the investigation. ([fox5atlanta.com](https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/cherokee-hs-shooting-plot-warrants-reveal-new-details))
The suspects are 17-year-old Shane Keith Taylor, of Metter, Georgia; 21-year-old Michael Brandon Terry, of Chatsworth, California; and a former Cherokee High School student who is a minor and has not been publicly identified.
According to the warrants, Taylor and Terry allegedly agreed to provide weapons and outfits for the former student. Investigators also say the group discussed buying body armour, video cameras and combat boots. ([apnews.com](https://apnews.com/article/c6751e11c9bde87e83ddf464f392c77c?utm_source=openai))
How the Cherokee High School shooting plot was uncovered
The investigation began on 19 October, when the FBI flagged threatening posts directed at the school and contacted Cherokee County School District police. School officers then brought in detectives from the Canton Police Department.
The juvenile suspect was arrested on 20 October and faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and disrupting or interfering with the operation of public schools. Taylor and Terry were arrested on 23 October, with Taylor taken to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Centre and Terry detained in California pending transfer to Georgia. Police have said there is no known ongoing threat to Cherokee High School or any other school in Cherokee County. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not disclosed how the suspects knew one another or whether Terry had a previous connection to Georgia.
Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell said the safety of pupils and staff was a priority and praised the work of detectives and law enforcement partners involved in the arrests.
Cherokee County School District superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis said the district’s safety procedures and links with law enforcement had helped prevent the alleged plan from becoming an attack.
Taylor is being treated as an adult under Georgia law. He is being held without bond and is due to appear for a preliminary hearing on 13 November. Terry is awaiting extradition from California, while the juvenile’s case is being handled separately because of their age.
