Gary Neville has called on the Glazer family to sell Manchester United, arguing that the club’s continuing decline requires a complete change of ownership.
The former United captain made the demand during the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, as scrutiny intensifies around the club’s poor start under Michael Carrick.
“The Glazers have to sell Manchester United, the time has come!” Neville said.
He also questioned the American owners’ connection with the club, highlighting their absence from Old Trafford during their long association with United.
“I hear the Glazers family are very popular in the USA, they go to every NFL game in Florida. They have never been to Old Trafford in 20 years,” he added.
Gary Neville renews criticism of Manchester United ownership
Neville’s comments come amid reports that a sale of Manchester United remains possible. The Glazers are understood to be waiting for the right moment to cash in, with developments such as a new stadium potentially increasing the club’s value.
Members of the Glazer family have also reportedly discussed selling some or all of their remaining stake amid renewed Middle Eastern interest, although no formal bid has been confirmed.
Responsibility for United’s performances does not rest solely with the owners. INEOS now controls the football operation, while Carrick and the players have faced mounting criticism after the club’s poor results.
However, the Glazers retain dominant voting power at Manchester United, while INEOS controls around 29 per cent, according to the club’s 2026 annual report.
Managers have changed, significant sums have been spent and another football structure has been introduced, yet United continue to trail England’s leading clubs. Neville’s argument is that replacing Carrick could bring only a temporary improvement, while a change of ownership may be needed to end the cycle of decline.
