Liverpool are considering Gavi as a potential long-term replacement for Alexis Mac Allister, with a move for the Barcelona midfielder being assessed for summer 2027 if the Argentine leaves Anfield.
Mac Allister remains under contract with Liverpool until 2028, but his public disappointment at not receiving improved terms had created uncertainty over his future. That situation now appears to be shifting, with the club preparing a fresh contract proposal and potentially opening negotiations.
Liverpool considering Gavi as Mac Allister alternative
Fichajes reports that Liverpool are monitoring Gavi as part of their contingency planning. The 22-year-old’s role at Barcelona has been reduced amid competition from Rodri, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Fermín López.
Gavi is contracted to Barcelona until 2030, leaving the Catalan club in a strong negotiating position. Liverpool would therefore be expected to pay a substantial fee if they decide to pursue the Spain midfielder.
The latest development over Mac Allister could have a significant bearing on those plans. Extending the Argentina international’s stay would offer Liverpool a proven Premier League performer who already understands the club’s system and has rediscovered his best form this season.
Real Madrid are also reportedly monitoring Mac Allister, while José Mourinho has been identified as particularly keen on the World Cup winner. However, Liverpool’s willingness to prepare a new proposal suggests they are not simply planning for his departure.
Gavi’s qualities remain highly regarded at Barcelona. Former manager Xavi once said: “He puts his soul, his heart and his character on the pitch.” He also insisted that the midfielder had “no limits”.
His aggression, pressing and technical ability would fit the energetic midfield associated with Andoni Iraola, while his age would leave room for further development. Yet signing Gavi would be considerably more complicated, and potentially more expensive, than renewing Mac Allister’s contract.
For now, Gavi is likely to remain an attractive option should Mac Allister eventually move on. Liverpool’s immediate priority, however, appears to be finding out whether they can retain the midfielder already established at the highest level.
