Paris Fury has described feeling “so scared” as her husband Tyson’s life unravelled after he achieved his lifelong ambition of beating Wladimir Klitschko, in a new Netflix documentary exploring the heavyweight’s addiction and mental health struggles.
Fury, 38, says he lost his “whole point of existence” after defeating Klitschko in Dusseldorf in 2015. He later battled an addiction to alcohol and cocaine before returning to boxing in 2018.
In the documentary trailer, Fury says: “All I wanted to was beat Klitschko. It was an obsession for me.
“I’d achieved all my childhood dreams, but my whole point of existence had been taken away. I didn’t want to live.”
Paris, Fury’s wife and childhood sweetheart, became emotional as she recalled the period following the victory. She said her husband had told her immediately after the fight: “This is as good as it is ever going to get.”
“I didn’t understand at the time what he meant,” she says in the film. “The Tyson I knew was gone and I was so scared.”
Tyson Fury’s return to boxing
The documentary charts Fury’s rise to the heavyweight world title and examines a childhood in which emotions were rarely discussed. Fury says he grew up surrounded by strong male figures and was taught that showing emotion was not acceptable.
He fought his way back from his addiction problems to resume his career in 2018, later beating Deontay Wilder in a notable trilogy and winning the WBC heavyweight title.
Fury subsequently sought to unify the division against Oleksandr Usyk, but lost twice to the Ukrainian in two contests.
Netflix cameras have followed the Fury family since 2023. The latest series focuses on Fury’s decision to come out of retirement and the family’s move from Morecambe to the Isle of Wight.
The streaming service is also due to broadcast Fury’s fight against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff on December 11.
