Chelsea have made Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott a priority target for the January transfer window after failing to sign the 23-year-old during the summer.
The England international has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most highly rated young midfielders, and Chelsea are now understood to be in a stronger position to pursue a deal.
Chelsea lead the race for Alex Scott
Florian Plettenberg reports that Chelsea have renewed their focus on Scott, with the club hoping to conclude an agreement early in the winter window. Personal terms have also reportedly been largely settled verbally.
Bournemouth resisted substantial approaches for the midfielder in the summer, but their position appears to have softened after Scott turned down a new contract.
The Cherries are understood to be considering offers in excess of £80 million and have begun identifying potential replacements. Chelsea are regarded as favourites to sign Scott, ahead of Liverpool.
Scott’s development has been underlined by his recent first senior starts for England. His ability to operate as a No 6, No 8 or No 10 has added to his appeal as Chelsea continue to reshape their midfield under Xabi Alonso.
Bournemouth manager Marco Rose has previously expressed his admiration for the player, saying: “I love Alex. I’m so proud and happy he’s a Bournemouth player.”
Any deal would represent a significant investment, particularly if Bournemouth’s valuation approaches £100 million. However, Scott’s Premier League experience and versatility are seen as reducing the risk attached to signing another young player for a substantial fee.
His decision not to extend his contract, combined with Bournemouth’s preparations for a possible departure, has increased the prospect of a January move. Chelsea will hope those factors help them negotiate a fee closer to £80 million.
