Xabi Alonso has admitted that the Carabao Cup is Chelsea’s least important competition after their fourth-round exit to Liverpool, insisting that the Premier League is the club’s main focus.
Chelsea drew 1-1 at Anfield before losing 6-5 on penalties, with Wesley Fofana missing the decisive spot-kick. Morgan Rogers had put the visitors ahead before Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool.
Alonso makes Chelsea priorities clear
Alonso said after the match: “This is the least important competition for us.” He added: “The Premier League is the main focus.”
The Chelsea manager urged his players to change their mindset quickly, with limited recovery time before their next league fixture. The club’s official account took a more positive view of the performance, highlighting the courage and competitiveness shown by the players at Anfield.
Alonso’s comments came after Chelsea had also suffered a defeat to Tottenham, leaving their next Premier League match against struggling Manchester United with added importance. Chelsea are currently fifth in the table.
There was criticism of Alonso’s decisions during the defeat, with Clinton Morrison and Jobi McAnuff questioning why Estevao Willian remained an unused substitute while Chelsea searched for an attacking spark.
Prioritising the Premier League is understandable, but describing the Carabao Cup as the least important competition carries a risk. Chelsea had a realistic opportunity to win a trophy, and the significance of the decision will depend heavily on how they perform in the league.
If Chelsea climb the table and challenge near the top, Alonso’s comments are likely to fade from attention. If their league form worsens, the Liverpool defeat may instead be viewed as a missed opportunity.
