Clinton Morrison believes Cody Gakpo is playing the best football of his career after the Liverpool forward’s impressive first-half display against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Gakpo converted a 43rd-minute penalty at Anfield to bring Liverpool level at 1-1, after Morgan Rogers had put Chelsea ahead from the spot. The Netherlands international sent goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way with a composed finish into the bottom-left corner.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live at half-time, former Crystal Palace striker Morrison praised Gakpo’s contribution as Liverpool established control of the match.
“Yeah, Liverpool deserve it to be fair. They have been the better team. It was a mistake from Fofana. I don’t know why his hand is in the air,” Morrison said.
“What a penalty from Cody Gakpo into the bottom corner, and he’s been a good player for Liverpool this season, I think he’s playing his best football. I think he’s been outstanding.”
The penalty was Gakpo’s seventh Carabao Cup goal at Anfield and continued his strong run of form under Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola.
Iraola may also have to consider changes for the second half, with James McConnell and Lewis Koumas both having been booked during a physical opening 45 minutes. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Alexis Mac Allister were among the experienced options available on the Liverpool bench.
