Passengers on two trains involved in a crash in Castilla-La Mancha have described the panic inside the wreckage, with one teenager saying people were trapped and unable to escape.
Eduarda, 17, said she heard “people screaming in panic” as passengers struggled to get out.
“A lot of people couldn’t get out. I heard screams … It was horrific,” she told the BBC. “It was a catastrophe … I could hear people screaming in panic.”
A regional spokesperson said 147 people had been travelling on the Iryo train and 397 on the Renfe service.
Passenger Rafael Barcelo said he had been standing up to get a coffee when the crash happened, and felt fortunate to have stepped away from his seat.
“We were having breakfast, drinking a coffee when we felt a very strong impact and we were sent flying,” he said, adding that there had been at least eight victims from his carriage.
