A woman has been shot dead by police in Adelaide after allegedly threatening officers with an axe in the suburb of Firle.
Officers were called to a property in Gwynne Street shortly before 2am on Thursday, where they encountered the armed woman. Police first attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but opened fire when it failed to work.
The officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived, but the woman died from her injuries. One police officer suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Neighbours told Sunrise they were woken by the disturbance and heard police shouting at the woman to come out of the house shortly before the shooting.
A major police operation remains under way at the scene, with major crime detectives investigating the circumstances of the incident. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Gwynne Street is expected to remain closed for much of the morning, and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
South Australia Police are expected to provide a further update later on Thursday.
