Anthony Albanese’s disapproval rating has reached its highest level since he became Australian prime minister in 2022, as a new poll puts Labor level with One Nation on a primary vote of 28 per cent.
The Guardian Essential Poll, conducted in the aftermath of the alleged attack on Indi MP Helen Haines, placed the Coalition behind both parties on 23 per cent.
Labor’s primary vote fell from 29 per cent in the previous poll. Pollsters attributed the decline to what they described as “coinciding with a further deterioration of Albanese’s personal approval ratings”.
The survey questioned 1,087 Australians and recorded a surge for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, which is now polling at the same level as the governing party.
The figures came days after Victorian Labor faced a further warning, with Pyxis Polling & Insights placing Jess Wilson’s Coalition ahead of newly appointed premier Ben Carroll’s reshuffled Labor cabinet.
That state polling has also become more fragmented since One Nation entered the contest, with pollsters estimating the party could take as much as 20 per cent of Victoria’s primary vote.
