Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing during Bayern Munich training last week, with the club confirming that he is recovering from meningeal irritation.
Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said the head coach left hospital on Wednesday and would now rest and take medication. No date has been set for his return to the touchline.
“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl told broadcaster ARD. “He was discharged from the hospital today [Wednesday]. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
He said the condition had caused the incident on Friday and expressed confidence that Kompany would soon be able to resume his duties, but only after receiving medical clearance.
Kompany had collapsed at Bayern’s training ground during a second-team training session. He had also missed media duties before the Champions League match against Arsenal because of a viral infection, although he was present in the dugout for the 2-2 draw.
Assistant manager Aaron Danks, who has taken charge of the team during Kompany’s absence, said there was still no timetable for the Belgian’s return.
“It’s obviously a really positive step in his road to recovery,” Danks said after Bayern’s 6-1 German Cup win over Magdeburg. “He gets to settle back at home now, be closer to his family, be closer to his home comforts but it’s still really important that he takes his rest and he recovers.”
Danks added: “Our doctors will continue to work closely with Vince and at the right moment, he will be back with us once he is fit and healthy to do that and we look forward to that day.”
He said Kompany’s health remained the club’s “number one priority” and that the coach was still in recovery mode, with Bayern’s medical staff continuing to monitor his progress.
Danks has overseen Bayern’s last two matches, including their 3-1 Bundesliga victory at Freiburg. The league leaders face title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
