Passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey have been stranded in Asia after the residential cruise company said it could not secure enough fuel to continue operating.
One resident told Reuters that passengers had been forced to disembark in Cambodia because the company had run out of money and could not reach the next port.
The passengers are attempting to raise funds to return to the ship and resume their journey, but efforts to secure the money have so far been unsuccessful.
The crisis has left some residents with few alternatives. One passenger said many people had invested all their money in cabins aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey and sold their homes on land, leaving them without somewhere to return to.
Another passenger told the BBC that she did not regret choosing to live on the vessel, but said it was unfortunate that the US war with Iran had caused fuel prices to soar.
Villa Vie Odyssey residents seek temporary accommodation
The company had told residents it was “unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations” and gave them only hours to leave the ship.
Villa Vie said it had taken measures to offset the increased cost of fuel, but remained unable to move out of the red.
The company said it was working to find temporary housing for residents while efforts continued to address the situation.
