Newcastle United are reportedly monitoring Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton as they assess potential options ahead of the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old has attracted growing interest in the Premier League since leaving Liverpool permanently in 2025. His performances in France have raised the possibility of a return to English football, although Lyon are understood to be reluctant to lose him during the season.
Newcastle tracking Morton alongside Premier League rivals
Newcastle are among seven Premier League clubs said to be watching Morton. Liverpool, Everton, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Brighton are also reportedly keeping track of the midfielder.
Morton joined Lyon for an initial £10 million fee, with the deal potentially rising to £15m. Liverpool retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the transfer.
He has since become an important member of Paulo Fonseca’s side, showing that he can operate as either a deep-lying midfielder or in a more conventional central role.
Newcastle’s interest comes as manager Matthias Jaissle continues to reshape his midfield following significant changes at St James’ Park during the summer.
Lyon resistance could complicate January move
Morton has featured in all five of Lyon’s Ligue 1 matches this season, playing 366 league minutes. He has also remained heavily involved across all competitions after establishing himself as a regular during his first year in France.
Lyon’s position may prove the biggest obstacle to a January transfer. Morton’s contract runs until 2030, leaving the French club under little pressure to sell, while his importance to the team is reported to have made them unwilling to sanction a mid-season departure.
The situation could also make it difficult for Liverpool to bring back their former academy player, with the Merseyside club continuing to monitor his progress.
For Newcastle, Morton would represent a long-term option who already understands English football and has developed through regular first-team experience in Ligue 1. It remains uncertain whether the club will make a formal offer, but his performances have placed him firmly on the radar of several Premier League sides ahead of January.
