No arrests have been made after a fight involving students and adults broke out in the car park of a Maryland high school following a girls’ flag football game.
The altercation happened at Poolesville High School on Monday evening after the home side played Clarksburg High School in Montgomery County.
Officials from both schools said “disrespectful behaviour involving students and adults escalated in the parking lot” after the match. Taunting and arguments reportedly preceded the physical confrontation, prompting school staff to call Montgomery County Police.
Officers arrived at the school at about 9pm and identified six people connected with the incident, according to police. A cowbell was also reportedly used as a weapon during the fight.
A joint statement from Poolesville and Clarksburg said an adult had been taken to hospital for treatment. Police, however, said no one was transported, leaving conflicting accounts over whether anyone received medical treatment.
Administrators at both schools said they were continuing to investigate what happened and would consider disciplinary action under Montgomery County Public Schools’ student code of conduct and athletics rules.
“This is not how we expect members of either of our school communities, students and adults alike, to represent themselves, their schools or MCPS athletics,” the schools said.
The officials added that competitive sport could be “spirited and emotional”, but said respect was expected from players, students, coaches, families and spectators both during and after matches.
