A Houston police officer was taken to hospital after a speeding pickup truck struck a marked patrol car on the Eastex Freeway near the 610 Loop.
The collision happened on the northbound US 59 at the junction with Interstate 610, close to Kashmere Gardens, early on Thursday, 1 October. Officers had been controlling traffic after a semi-truck spilled part of its load on the carriageway.
Police said the driver of a red pickup failed to slow down and hit the rear of the patrol vehicle. The officer was taken to a local hospital in a stable condition and is expected to recover.
The female pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Local reports said she was believed to be aged between her 20s and 30s, although Houston police have not released her identity.
Investigators have not said whether alcohol or another form of intoxication contributed to the crash. The circumstances remain under investigation.
