RJ Mitte said his role in Breaking Bad had not made him a millionaire, claiming he lost much of his earnings to taxes and an allegedly dishonest business manager.
The actor discussed his finances during an appearance on The Iced Coffee Hour podcast last year, telling presenters that the money he earned was far less than people might have assumed.
Mitte said he had paid more in tax than he ultimately made, dismissing the situation as “the name of the game”.
He also alleged that a business manager he hired while still a teenager had taken advantage of him and more than a dozen other actors. He said most of those affected were elderly people or people with disabilities.
According to Mitte, the manager’s conduct did not involve poor investments or losses in the market. Instead, he accused her of siphoning off clients’ money.
He claimed that, when he sent her a cheque to cover his tax bill, she would provide a false filing and keep the money.
Mitte died in Texas on Monday and was reported to have died by suicide. Tributes have since been shared online following the actor’s death.
