The US Senate has approved a sweeping college sports bill intended to create a federal framework for athletics and protect student-athletes, despite opposition from some Democrats who said it could have the opposite effect.
The Protect College Sports Act passed by 77 votes to 22 on Thursday, following the adoption of amendments.
The legislation would regulate areas including name, image and likeness rights, as well as transfer eligibility. Supporters say it would bring greater stability to college athletics as large sums of money continue to enter the sector.
