Soulja Boy has teased a potential run for President of the United States in 2028, outlining four issues he said would form the focus of any political platform.
The 36-year-old rapper raised the possibility in an Instagram post on Saturday, October 10, alongside a photograph of himself standing in front of a US flag. He later shared headlines about the post after it attracted attention online.
“A new chapter. A bigger vision. A commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation,” he wrote.
He said his priorities would be “economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, education, and the future of technology and AI”.
“From music to business to technology, I’ve always believed in thinking bigger and challenging what’s possible,” Soulja Boy added. “Now I’m exploring what it means to bring that same vision to public service. The future starts with a conversation.”
Rappers who have pursued politics
Soulja Boy would not be the first rapper to seek political office or express ambitions of becoming president.
Kanye West announced a presidential campaign in 2020, launching his bid in July of that year after missing ballot deadlines in at least six states. He subsequently qualified for the ballot in 13 states, but conceded the campaign after failing to receive enough votes.
West said in 2022 that he would run again in the 2024 election, although a spokesperson said in late 2023 that he was not actively a candidate.
Other rappers to attempt political campaigns include Afroman, who filed paperwork in 2024, and Waka Flocka Flame, who announced a bid in 2015 but was then below the constitutional minimum age of 35. Wyclef Jean also attempted to run for president in Haiti.
