A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder over the suspected mistaken-identity shooting of Joshua Macdonald in western Sydney, becoming the third person accused in connection with the killing.
Mr Macdonald, 40, was shot outside a home in Merrylands West on September 2. Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene, but he died there.
Police arrested the man after executing a search warrant at a property in Pemulwuy at about 6am on Thursday.
Detectives allege he transported the gunmen to and from vehicles before and after the shooting. They also allege he drove people involved in destroying the vehicles used after the attack.
He has been charged with murder, participating in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity, and failing to comply with an order to access digital evidence. Bail was refused and he is expected to appear in court.
Police believe Mr Macdonald was not the intended target, making his death the second suspected organised-crime-related mistaken-identity shooting in Sydney in two days.
An 18-year-old man, whom police allege was contracted to surveil the residence using a drone, has already been charged with murder and remains before the courts.
Last week, detectives arrested a 28-year-old woman after searching a unit in Wollongong, south of Sydney. She was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, participating in a criminal group and failing to comply with an order to access digital evidence.
The charges followed the fatal shooting of 23-year-old university student Marco Talia at a home in south-west Glen Alpine the morning before Mr Macdonald was killed. Attackers had forced their way into the property.
