A collision involving three tractor-trailers on the outer loop of Interstate 495 in Bethesda, Maryland, caused major disruption to the Washington DC region’s morning commute on Wednesday, 23 September.
The crash was reported at about 12.30am between Old Georgetown Road and River Road in Montgomery County, close to the sharp curve where the Beltway passes over the Interstate 270 overpass, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer.
Several lanes remained closed during the morning, with traffic restricted to a single lane in parts of the affected stretch. No injuries had been reported.
Motorists faced lengthy delays as emergency crews dealt with the scene, with congestion expected to continue through the morning rush hour. The disruption was compounded by wet conditions across the region.
The National Weather Service forecast further showers and cloudy conditions in the Washington area on Wednesday, with rain likely to affect travel during the early part of the day.
