Tropical Storm Fay has formed in the North Atlantic, becoming the sixth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Fay had maximum sustained winds of about 45mph on Sunday and was moving slowly north-northeast over open water. The storm was located roughly 450 miles south-west of the Azores, at about 33.7 degrees north and 33.1 degrees west.
Forecasters expect a small amount of further strengthening over the next 24 hours, but Fay is likely to weaken soon afterwards as it encounters strong upper-level wind shear and cooler sea temperatures.
The storm is expected to remain over the remote North Atlantic throughout its lifetime. No coastal watches or warnings have been issued, and there is no expected impact on Florida or the US mainland.
