Donald Trump has said he is banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House, accusing the three news outlets of reporting what he called “FAKE NEWS”.
The US president announced the move on Truth Social, saying: “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”
He added: “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
The decision is likely to face a challenge because it could conflict with constitutional guarantees protecting free speech and a free press. Trump did not explain how the ban would be implemented.
CNN, MSNOW, Politico and the National Press Club did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Mr Trump has frequently criticised coverage he believes portrays him negatively. He has also pursued lawsuits against news organisations and attacked individual reporters in person and on social media.
Last year, he barred the Associated Press from the regular pool of reporters covering his movements after the agency did not use his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. Mr Trump has instructed executive branch employees to refer to it as the Gulf of America.
The Associated Press filed a lawsuit over that decision, which remains ongoing.
Since returning to office, Mr Trump has also taken legal action against a number of other outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC.
