Two Liberty High School students have died after a two-car crash near Brentwood, California, with two other people taken to hospital with injuries described as moderate but not life-threatening.
The collision happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, 13 September, near Deer Valley Road and Balfour Road. Antioch Police Department officers said they reached the scene about 10 minutes after the crash and found two vehicles, a white BMW and a silver Infiniti, which had left the road and come to rest down an embankment.
Two 17-year-old boys from Discovery Bay, who were Liberty High student-athletes, died at the scene, according to police. Another Liberty student and athlete was among those injured, while the BMW driver was also taken for medical treatment.
Investigation continues into Brentwood crash
The names of those involved have not been released as authorities complete notifications to relatives.
Liberty High staff confirmed that three of the four people involved were current students and athletes at the school. Jessica Del Castillo, who leads a parent group at Liberty, said the school community was “hurting tremendously” and that her thoughts were with those returning to campus and trying to process the loss.
Emergency crews found both cars off the roadway. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the Antioch Police Department’s traffic unit.
Police have appealed for witnesses, or anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from the area around the time of the collision, to come forward.
