A federal judge has temporarily blocked Donald Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, ordering that journalists’ access and press credentials be restored immediately.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly granted an emergency request from the three news organisations on Thursday, September 24, while their legal challenge to the administration’s decision proceeds. The outlets sued the Trump administration after reporters were refused entry to the White House grounds on Saturday, following the President’s announcement that they were being barred over coverage he described as “fake news”.
The organisations argue that the restrictions breach the First Amendment, which protects freedom of the press, as well as journalists’ right to due process.
During a hearing on Wednesday, Judge Kelly questioned whether the administration had followed the required procedures before revoking the reporters’ access. He referred to legal precedents requiring journalists to receive notice and an opportunity to respond before their credentials are withdrawn.
