US immigration authorities are investigating a reported ICE-related shooting in North Austin that left a person in hospital, officials and local politicians said on Sunday, September 20.
The incident took place in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement was handling the investigation, but said no further details were immediately available.
Calls for transparency after reported ICE shooting
Texas state representative Vikki Goodwin described the incident as “another ICE-related shooting” in a post on X. She said Austin police were at the scene to manage traffic and that the victim had been taken to hospital.
“We will get more information, but this violence cannot continue,” Ms Goodwin wrote.
US representative Greg Casar separately alleged that an ICE officer had shot someone in Austin that morning. He called for a full independent investigation, the immediate release of body-worn camera footage and accountability if any officer had broken the law.
“The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning,” Mr Casar wrote.
He later accused ICE of repeatedly shooting people and then misrepresenting what had happened, adding: “We will demand truth, transparency and accountability.”
The victim’s identity and condition have not been released. Authorities have also not said what led to the shooting, identified those involved or explained the circumstances surrounding the reported use of a firearm.
ICE is leading the investigation and further information was not immediately available.
