A Fairburn police officer opened fire after dogs ran towards officers at a home in South Fulton, Georgia, striking a resident in the foot, according to an initial incident report.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on Thursday in the 300 block of Bishop Road, where officers had gone to investigate a report of a woman in the roadway.
Police said officers approached the property for more information and that several dogs ran after an officer when the door was opened. The officer fired at the animals, and a resident was hit in the foot.
Emergency crews treated the resident, whose injury was described as non-life-threatening.
Woman says husband and two dogs were shot
A woman who lives at the property told local television station FOX 5 Atlanta that the injured resident was her husband. She said a pit bull began barking when an officer came to the door and was shot.
She said a German shepherd then went outside, prompting her husband to leave the house to bring the dog back in.
“My husband pushes past me to go and grab the dog to scoop him up and bring him back in the house, and the officer started shooting,” she said.
The woman said both dogs were shot and taken by animal control officers to a vet. Authorities have not confirmed the condition of the animals or provided further details about the shots fired.
The officer involved is a member of the Fairburn Police Department. South Fulton police attended the scene after the shooting.
Personnel from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were also seen at the property. The agency commonly investigates incidents involving police shootings, although it has not released details about this case.
