The murder-for-hire trial of Dallas rapper Yella Beezy has been delayed by several months, after his defence team asked for more time to prepare the case.
Jury selection had been due to begin on Monday in the capital murder case against Beezy, whose real name is Markies Conway. His lawyers said they needed access to transcripts from the recent trial of Kewon White, a man prosecutors accuse of carrying out the killing.
They also told the court that an expert witness would be unavailable during the week they expect to present their defence. The request was made shortly after White was convicted of killing fellow Dallas rapper MO3.
MO3, whose real name was Melvin Noble, was shot on Interstate 35 in Dallas on 11 November 2020. Prosecutors allege Conway paid White to carry out the killing after a long-running feud between the two artists.
White was found guilty last week and sentenced to life in prison without parole. His conviction does not determine the outcome of Conway’s case, which will be considered separately by another jury.
Conway has pleaded not guilty. A new date for jury selection has not been announced.
