Liverpool could revive their pursuit of Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh after the 22-year-old reportedly remained keen on a move to Anfield despite the collapse of negotiations during the summer.
The Reds made two offers for the Gambia international, with an initial £50 million bid followed by an improved proposal worth £60m. Brighton rejected both approaches and were understood to value Minteh at closer to £70m.
Minteh’s preference is believed to be Liverpool, although Manchester United and other clubs are also monitoring his situation. The winger’s continued interest leaves open the possibility of a fresh approach in a future transfer window.
Liverpool move remains attractive to Minteh
Liverpool’s interest was driven by a desire to add greater depth in wide areas. Minteh mainly operates on the right and had recorded 10 goals and nine assists in 73 appearances for Brighton by early September.
His pace, direct approach and Premier League experience make him a natural fit for the profile Liverpool are seeking. At 22, he also has scope to develop further after making the move to a larger club.
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler indicated after the transfer window closed that Minteh could still secure his “dream” move in the future if he continued to perform.
The immediate uncertainty concerns the player’s fitness. Minteh has been recovering from a leg problem that was expected to keep him out until around October, meaning Liverpool are likely to assess his return before deciding whether to renew their interest.
Transfer fee could determine Brighton winger’s future
Minteh’s apparent preference for Liverpool would strengthen the club’s position, but Brighton have shown little inclination to lower their valuation. A January move would depend on both the winger recovering strongly and the Seagulls softening their demands.
Liverpool have already demonstrated a willingness to pay £60m for Minteh. If Brighton continue to seek substantially more, Julian Ward may decide that the funds would be better used elsewhere.
For now, the main elements of a potential deal remain in place: Liverpool want the player, Minteh reportedly favours Liverpool, and the asking price is the principal obstacle.
